Great post ! I think the main reason why careerism is so sticky is that, somewhat similar to religion, it makes things easy. It gives you answers and recipes instead of doubt and perpertual search: do this and that and you’ll feel happy and important (for the sake of precision, the difference to religion is that the latter gives you mostly intangible answers, which actually can work as catalysts for more questions). It’s “the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth”. On the other hand though, I would argue that once you understand that your professional life is just one of the many facets of your reality, then you’ll gain an additional degree of freedom over the cultural dominance of careerism. You’d make a Gödelian step out of the system
